BRYCON WINS PRESTIGIOUS “RED” AWARD FROM AZRE MAGAZINE

The Moenkopi Legacy Inn and Suites was seleted as the Project of the Year by AZRE Magazine, the Arizona Commercial Real Estate Magazine. The hotel built in the Upper Village of Moenkopi on Hopi Tribal lands is the first economic development project constructed by the tribe in 50 years. The magazine considered nominations of all the major commercial projects completed in Arizona in 2009 and a selection committee comprised of magazine editorial members and development and construction professionals selected the hotel. It won in the “most challenging project” category for the many obstacles the project faced on its way to completion, including working with Tribal Elders, lack of water and the difficulty of securing power and gas to the remote site. The hotel features architecture that blends Hopi tradition with modern construction. It features a large circular window at the hotel entrance that represents the Hopi calendar with the Four Worlds of Hopi etched into the window’s four quadrants. A water feature in the courtyard represents the Village of Moenkopi, which means “flowing water” in the Hopi language. In addition, there is a replica ceremonial kiva located in the Kiva Garden, which is set in a north axis in accordance with Hopi tradition. The garden and lounge areas on the first and third floors overlook the San Francisco Peaks, which are considered sacred to the Hopi people. The grand fireplace in the hotel’s airy lobby was designed by local artisan, Edward Calnimptewa, and incorporates stone and replicas of the ancient stone paintings found on cliffs in the nearby desert. The prestigious Red Award was presented to BRYCON during an awards banquet at the Ritz Carlton Phoenix on March 4. In addition, AZRE has published a special report highlighting all the winning projects in its March/April issue. The magazine also created a video on the project, featuring interviews with the project manager David Smith. You can watch the video by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OMdZhrNuXQ
