HUNDREDS ATTEND RIBBON CUTTING FOR CONNOR HALL

Under skies threatening summer rain, hundreds of students, alumni and well-wishers attended the Aug. 15th ribbon-cutting ceremony for Connor Hall, the newly completed arts and vocational center at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. BRYCON’s president, Bill Lemon, was among the dignitaries cutting the ribbon to open the building. While a punch list of small items remain to be done, the building is substantially complete and has received a certificate of occupancy. Dr. Ronald Stern, the headmaster of the school, praised BRYCON for completing the building in time for the start of the fall 2010 term. Connor Hall is the oldest building on campus, having been built in 1928 as the boys dormitory. Through the years however, the building no longer served the needs of the school. Studio Southwest Architects designed the building to save the historic facade, while adding an addition that would better meet the needs of the students. The building was designed to have ample natural light and wide hallways for students to congregate and communicate via sign language. According to Dr. Stern, the building meets the needs of deaf students, who are “people of sight.”

BRYCON MOVES UP IN SOUTHWEST CONTRACTOR RANKINGS

In the April/May issue of Southwest Contractor magazine, BRYCON Construction moved up to 38th place from 63rd place in 2009. The magazine covers construction companies in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. The rankings were based on surveys voluntarily submitted in the first quarter by the companies. In the article accompanying the rankings, the magazine editors noted that “revenues from general contracting took a nosedive in 2009 as expected, down over 27 percent.” The magazine went on to observe: “At no other point in the 14-year history of Southwest Contractor’s ranking has there been as precipitous of a drop.” BRYCON reported 2009 revenues of $87.9 million. BRYCON WINS PRESTIGIOUS SSLEA AWARD FOR SAFETY

BRYCON WINS PRESTIGIOUS SSLEA AWARD FOR SAFETY

For the fourth time and the third year in a row, BRYCON has won the coveted Supplier Safety Leadership and Excellence Award for Construction Services from Intel Corporation. The company was informed in early March that it had won the award for 2009. Winning the award is notable for many reasons, not the least of which, is the rigorous standards for safety that companies are held to. For example, the selection committee takes into account field safety and equipment the company employs to keep workers safe; the management’s commitment to safety; and how management encourages field personnel to take “ownership” of safety. In addition, the selection committee also ranks companies on their level of civic and community involvement, their level of charitable giving and the length of time most employees have been with the company. BRYCON’s president, Bill Lemon, said just being considered for the award shows the value the company places on providing a safe, high-quality workplace.
“Intel is a leader in the industry from a safety performance standpoint and has many contractors that are top-notch to choose from,” Lemon said. “This is just another validation of what I already know - BRYCON is No. 1 because of what our people do,” he added.
BRYCON will be formally presented with the award on March 31, 2010 in Anaheim, CA. The company first won the award in 2003, then again in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

BRYCON WINS PRESTIGIOUS “RED” AWARD FROM AZRE MAGAZINE

The Moenkopi Legacy Inn and Suites was seleted as the Project of the Year by AZRE Magazine, the Arizona Commercial Real Estate Magazine. The hotel built in the Upper Village of Moenkopi on Hopi Tribal lands is the first economic development project constructed by the tribe in 50 years. The magazine considered nominations of all the major commercial projects completed in Arizona in 2009 and a selection committee comprised of magazine editorial members and development and construction professionals selected the hotel. It won in the “most challenging project” category for the many obstacles the project faced on its way to completion, including working with Tribal Elders, lack of water and the difficulty of securing power and gas to the remote site. The hotel features architecture that blends Hopi tradition with modern construction. It features a large circular window at the hotel entrance that represents the Hopi calendar with the Four Worlds of Hopi etched into the window’s four quadrants. A water feature in the courtyard represents the Village of Moenkopi, which means “flowing water” in the Hopi language. In addition, there is a replica ceremonial kiva located in the Kiva Garden, which is set in a north axis in accordance with Hopi tradition. The garden and lounge areas on the first and third floors overlook the San Francisco Peaks, which are considered sacred to the Hopi people. The grand fireplace in the hotel’s airy lobby was designed by local artisan, Edward Calnimptewa, and incorporates stone and replicas of the ancient stone paintings found on cliffs in the nearby desert. The prestigious Red Award was presented to BRYCON during an awards banquet at the Ritz Carlton Phoenix on March 4. In addition, AZRE has published a special report highlighting all the winning projects in its March/April issue. The magazine also created a video on the project, featuring interviews with the project manager David Smith. You can watch the video by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OMdZhrNuXQ

BRYCON INVESTING IN PRODUCTIVITY TRAINING

For the second year, BRYCON has signed up employees to take intensive one-day seminars on productivity and productivity tracking. The seminars are taught by construction consultant Michael Brunner of Indiana, whose company is called Construction Consulting Services. Brunner, a nationally recognized leader in efficiency and an exciting motivational speaker, taught 40 members of the New Mexico Facilities Construction Group and Rio Rancho semiconductor staffs about effective preparation, waste and how time equals money. This year, the attendees were field personnel from the electrical, plumbing and architectural trades. Part of the training included learning how to read a basic company income statement and learning how to recognize “productive time” versus “nonproductive time.” After the seminars, most attendees reported the seminars were both informative and entertaining. According to Paul Briggs, the Facilities Construction Group Division Manager, such training is important for helping employees learn to better manage their time on the job and to think about small ways they can improve performance.
“It’s our belief that productivity training has benefits for the company and for our clients,” said Briggs. “We see benefits in cost savings, efficiency and in employee incentives.”

BRYCON READY TO TACKLE GREEN BUILDING PROJECTS

BRYCON currently has four LEED Accredited Professionals on staff who can handle any kind of green building projects in the Southwest. The newly minted LEED “APs” are Paul Briggs, Facilities Construction Group Division Manager for New Mexico; Gary Benavidez, Project Manager in New Mexico; Tom Martin, Project Engineer in Colorado and Utah; and Justin Adams, Project Manager in Arizona. The four passed a grueling national examination sponsored by the United States Green Building Council to become LEED Accredited Professionals. The USGBC developed the program to promote sustainability, energy efficiency and recyling in the “built environment.” LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Obtaining LEED accredidation is important because increasingly all publicly funded construction projects are mandated to be “green” and to meet rigorous standards for energy efficiency, indoor environmental air quality and reduced water consumption. Also, many private clients are striving to have their projects meet LEED certification standards as a way of demonstrating social responsibility.

All four BRYCON team members are now accredited to handle green building projects involving new construction, remodeling and additions. In fact, BRYCON’s first LEED project is the remodeling and renovation of the historic Connor Hall at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe. All the new additions to the building will be constructed to meet LEED Silver certification.

Wrigley Mansion Gets Face Lift

"IT CAN NOT BE DONE”. That’s what our competitor said when the Hormel family ask them to expand the Wrigley Mansion in 13 weeks. A Registered National Landmark and “Phoenix Point of Pride,” the 16,850 square foot mansion was built by chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. in 1929. The current Owner, George “Geordie” Hormel, and Wrigley Mansion Club Representatives, entrusted BRYCON as their Contractor to restore the mansion’s blend of Spanish Colonial Revival, Californian Monterey and Mediterranean architectural styles. This fast track renovation and addition to the existing Veranda and Lounge of the Wrigley Mansion Club had phased completion dates to accomodate pre-booked events. The 4,000 square foot project consisted of demolition of the existing soft enclosure and the new construction of perimeter walls and roof. The Lounge, originally one-level, was expanded to incorporate a second story balcony and new VIP area. This is the second project that BRYCON Construction has successfully completed for Wrigley in the last three years.
