Amid applause and cheers from family, friends and coworkers, three BRYCON employees graduated from the 2009 Apprenticeship programs sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors of New Mexico. They were among 14 BRYCON employees enrolled in apprenticeship training programs at ABC. ABC promotes excellence in commercial construction in New Mexico. The banquet and awards ceremony took place at Sandia Resort & Casino on Friday, June 5.

LEMON FAMILY ENDOWS A LECTURESHIP SERIES AT UNM
At a lecture and ceremony at the Centennial Engineering Center at the University of New Mexico, BRYCON’s president, Bill Lemon, surprised his father and BRYCON’s founder, Bryant W. Lemon Sr., with an announcement of an endowed lecture series in Bryant’s name at the School of Engineering and Construction Management. The endowment will fund an annual, on-going professional lecture series in the name of Bryant W. Lemon Sr.
“This endowment to the University of New Mexico’s Department of Civil Engineering and Contstruction is created to fosters Bryant’s core belief that higher education is the key to individual growth and to the long-term betterment of the construction industry,” said Bill Lemon in announcing the fund.
The first lecture featured Georia Tech professor and author Charles Eastman, who spoke on Building Information Modeling in Design and Construction. Eastman is the author of “BIM Handbook: A Guide to Building Information Modeling for Owners, Managers, Designers, Engineers and Contractors.” Eastman spoke to a full auditorium of engineering and architecture students, construction management students and professional contractors, architects and engineers. Also present were several members of the Lemon family, including Peggy S. Lemon, Bryant’s wife; and two of Bryant’s daughters, Christine Schmidt of California; and Karen Gebhardt of Corrales. Karen was joined by her husband, Fred Gebhardt, and their son, Will Gebhardt.
BRYCON AWARDED SSLEA AWARD FOR THIRD TIME
For the third time, BRYCON has been awarded the prestigious Supplier Safety Leadership and Excellence Award from Intel in recognition of the company’s attention to construction safety. BRYCON was previously awarded the SSLEA in 2008 and 2003. The 2009 award was presented to BRYCON’s Arizona Intel division for its work inside Intel’s Chandler, AZ plant. BRYCON’s president Bill Lemon said the award is a recognition of the company’s commitment to safety—in every division. “BRYCON is one of the safest contractors in the Southwest and this award is just the latest proof,” Lemon said
BRYCON RISES IN “SOUTHWEST CONTRACTOR” LIST OF TOP CONTRACTORS
In 2008, BRYCON Construction rose to the rank of 63 in the annual listing of the top 140 construction companies in a ranking compiled by Southwest Contractor magazine. In the listing, published in the April issue, BRYCON rose 14 positions over the 2007 listing, in which the company ranked as the 77th largest contractor. The magazine has been conducting the ranking for the past 13 years. According to the magazine’s editors, the top 140 companies in the list collectively produced more than $20.3 billioin in general contracting revenue in 2008. The ranking includes firms in Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.
In spite of tough economic times, BRYCON has shown steady growth in revenues, said BRYCON president Bill Lemon. “We are working to control costs and to target clients in growth industries and that’s why we continue to show steady growth,” he said.
BRYCON INVESTING IN PRODUCTIVITY TRAINING
For the second year, BRYCON has signed up employees to take intensive one-day seminars on productivity and productivity tracking. The seminars are taught by construction consultant Michael Brunner of Indiana, whose company is called Construction Consulting Services. Brunner, a nationally recognized leader in efficiency and an exciting motivational speaker, taught 40 members of the New Mexico Facilities Construction Group and Rio Rancho semiconductor staffs about effective preparation, waste and how time equals money. This year, the attendees were field personnel from the electrical, plumbing and architectural trades. Part of the training included learning how to read a basic company income statement and learning how to recognize “productive time” versus “nonproductive time.” After the seminars, most attendees reported the seminars were both informative and entertaining. According to Paul Briggs, the Facilities Construction Group Division Manager, such training is important for helping employees learn to better manage their time on the job and to think about small ways they can improve performance.
“It’s our belief that productivity training has benefits for the company and for our clients,” said Briggs. “We see benefits in cost savings, efficiency and in employee incentives.”
Arizona field employees are also taking the productivity seminars.
BRYCON READY TO TACKLE GREEN BUILDING PROJECTS
BRYCON currently has four LEED Accredited Professionals on staff who can handle any kind of green building projects in the Southwest. The newly minted LEED “APs” are Paul Briggs, Facilities Construction Group Division Manager for New Mexico; Gary Benavidez, Project Manager in New Mexico; Tom Martin, Project Engineer in Colorado and Utah; and Justin Adams, Project Manager in Arizona. The four passed a grueling national examination sponsored by the United States Green Building Council to become LEED Accredited Professionals. The USGBC developed the program to promote sustainability, energy efficiency and recyling in the “built environment.” LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Obtaining LEED accredidation is important because increasingly all publicly funded construction projects are mandated to be “green” and to meet rigorous standards for energy efficiency, indoor environmental air quality and reduced water consumption. Also, many private clients are striving to have their projects meet LEED certification standards as a way of demonstrating social responsibility.
All four BRYCON team members are now accredited to handle green building projects involving new construction, remodeling and additions. In fact, BRYCON’s first LEED project is the remodeling and renovation of the historic Connor Hall at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe. All the new additions to the building will be constructed to meet LEED Silver certification.
BRYCON AWARDED CONTRACT FOR RENOVATION OF CONNOR HALL
BRYCON is proud to have been awarded the construction contract to renovate the historic Connor Hall at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. This challenging project involves upgrading a three-story historic building on the campus in Santa Fe. The building, which was built around 1930 and added to in the 1950s, served as a former boys’ dormitory. Doug Langley, the project manager, said the work will involve selected demolition and building a new addition that is designed to meet LEED certification. In addition, BRYCON is installing a new elevator to bring the building into ADA compliance. This is the second project BRYCON has built for the New Mexico School for the Deaf. The company recently completed the construction of a pre-engineered steel building which will serve as a maintenance facility.
BRYCON WINS SIXTH “TOP CONTRACTOR” RECOGNITION
For the sixth straight year, BRYCON has been recognized as the Number One provider of Cleanroom Construction in the Southwest by Arizona Ranking magazine. The ranking appeared in “The Best of Arizona Business” an annual listing published by Ranking Arizona, the largest opinion poll in Arizona. The ranking is based on the number of votes a contractor receives from subcontractors, vendors and owners.
“This is a tremedous stamp of approval from the industry and a sign that BRYCON continues to set the bar for this kind of highly controlled construction,” said Greg Thomas, Arizona’s Cleanroom Division manager.
In 2008, BRYCON was received the top vote for Tenant Improvements by the same publication.
BRYCON HONORED TO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR “ETHICS” AWARD
BRYCON was notified in February the company did not make the short-list for the Ethics in Business Award. However, everyone in the company was honored to simply have been considered for this prestigious award. The year-long process of consideration started in August of 2008 with a team of senior business students from the Anderson School of Management from the University of New Mexico. The students interviewed CEO Bryant Lemon, President Bill Lemon, CFO Phil Casaus and Charlotte Lane of the Marketing Department. During the interview, the students asked numerous questions on how management communicates its ethics policy to the workforce, how the company promotes a team spirit and what the company does to give back to the community. After the interview the student team asked to question several members of the BRYCON family, including George Pobar, the facility manager; Gloria Collao, the receptionist; Paul Briggs, division head of the Facilities Construction Group; and Larry Garcia, architectural superintendent at Intel.
While the interviews and questions were sometimes difficult to answer, they proved to be a valuable reason to look at ourselves as a company and examine how we communicate our core values to our employees. And while our team wasn’t selected, we are happy to have been considered and to have participated in this valuable program. The Ethics in Business Award is a partnership between the Samaritan Counseling Center of Albuquerque and the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico. The award is designed to promote ethics in business and fairness and decency in the workplace. The program for 2008 and 2009 caps off with an awards banquet on March 31.

The restaurants will be built in 120 days from start of construction to opening, said BRYCON project manager, Zack Snyder.
BRYCON’s Arizona Office Selected by Banner Health as Preferred Provider
The new year started off with a bang for BRYCON Construction when it was shortlisted, interviewed and selected as a “preferred provider” for Banner Health. Banner Health is a nonprofit healthcare provider headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. The selection caps five years of continued effort on the part of BRYCON’s Arizona office to expand its healthcare construction opportunities.
The selection of BRYCON opens the door for tenant improvement projects ranging in value from $250,000 to $10 million. Mark Barkenbush, Senior Project Executive with Banner Health, confirmed the award after the BRYCON team interviewed with the healthcare company on Dec. 11. Leading the interview team with the Banner Health Selection Committee was Jim Michaels, the Division Manager for Arizona Operations. He was assisted by Project Managers Kevin Freis, David Smith and Scott Dluzen, and Superintendent Jack Terry. Marketing manager Shirley Jamison created and operated the Power Point presentation.
BRYCON’s New Mexico operation has extensive experience in healthcare construction, having worked on projects for major healthcare providers in the Southwest, including Presbyterian Hospital, Lovelace Health System, University of New Mexico Hospital, Fresenius Medical Care of North America and the Veterans Administration. The selection by Banner Health will help BRYCON expand its committment to healthcare in Arizona.
